WHEN TEAMS WORK, EVERYTHING GETS EASIER.

DEVELOPING TEAM POSITIVE CULTURE AND PERFORMANCE

Most leaders of teams (included me for many years) are doing what they have seen before and what they have worked out themselves.

This is a hit and miss approach.  Take the guesswork out of being a great team leader and invest in yourself and your team.

When you're leading a great team, it seems like anything is possible. You are busy, but it doesn't feel overwhelming. You know the team is in it together and days end on a high note.

Unfortunately, a lot of things can interfere with a team's ability to stay on a roll. Any number of things can create a dysfunctional team environment, including:

  • Team Dynamics - the team doesn't feel like a team or collaboration takes more effort than it should or perhaps you spend hours dealing with conflict and difficult personalities.
  • The work itself - the day to day feels disconnected from a deeper purpose or the team is trying to achieve too many things at once.
  • The role or skill of the leader in managing the people, the plans or the practices needed to build a high performing team.
  • An entrenched issue - the team may need external help from someone not so close who can provide an outside perspective

Transform Leader is available to conduct team development days, facilitate planning days, provide a team/leadership coach or conduct a consultancy. Stop going it alone and save yourself time and angst.

Craig Farmer of Transform Leaders, helped our team discover our strengths and weaknesses, and made us self-aware of our individual behaviour, and how this impacts team dynamics.

When we first met Craig Farmer, our team scored our overall performance as a 4/10, after 3 sessions with Craig we scored ourselves working at an 8/10.

Craig is inspiring and motivating. He professionally and skillfully unpacked the key issues, and gave us achievable solutions to overcome these problems.

I would highly recommend him and would look forward to working with Craig in the future.

OUR TEAM TRAINING PROGRAMS

Setting Up Your Team

DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE THAT MANY LEADERS MAKE

Many leaders add new people to a team, or form a whole new team and don't take the time to set it up properly. In the end they always end up paying for it.

Do you have a new team (adding one person makes it a new team) or are you starting a new project? Most teams rush into the work of the team without getting clear agreements in the beginning about where they are going or how they want to get there. They wait until they hit a bump in the road, and then are forced to work out agreements in the midst of frustration and confusion.

Much team conflict is due to confusion and lack of agreement on expectations. Clarifying your expectations upfront will set up your team for success.

Have you worked together in the past?

It's a big mistake to assume that since people have worked together in the past, they are already a team. Each time a group of people come together around a new project, regardless of their past experiences together, they need to clarify their expectations. Even ongoing workgroups need to clarify expectations when they approach a new major initiative

When forming a new team it is often helpful to get someone from the outside to facilitate the conversations so that the leader can focus on content and not have to worry about process or activities. It also means that the leader knows that the team owns the outcomes because they can't accuse the leader at a later time that he manipulated the process.

We focus on 3 main aspects when running a team start-up day:

1. Creating a team charter that clarifies the six key aspects of teamwork

2. Creating understanding of the different personalities, strengths and experiences of those in the team

3. Creating positive interactions

4. Creating awareness and educating in team skills such as communication, decision-making, conflict resolution

5. Supporting the Team Leader to succeed in their role

Developing Team Dynamics & Communication

Understand why you and others behave the way you do, what motivates you and how you deal with conflict

The Relationship Awareness Theory Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) is a comprehensive instrument with multiple uses.

It is most commonly used as a means of creating effective communication through understanding relationship awareness and motivation and build conflict management skills under normal conditions (general growth and recruitment) and conflict.

It may be used to motivate changes in behaviour and language. It enhances workplace performance and productivity.

Our behaviour will often be variable, depending on the circumstances and what you are seeking to achieve. It's this variability that gives us the opportunity to learn and develop more effective choices of behaviour for the future and the opportunity to change unproductive behaviour.

The Motivational Value System are colour coded for ease of use and are memorable well after the training days.

Easy to use, practical and highly accurate

The SDI is self-administered with the guidance of a trained facilitator. Continuous learning is in-built into the inventory and will encourage communication, self-awareness and conflict resolution way beyond the training event.

Why is motivation important?

Our behaviour will often be variable, depending on the circumstances and what you are seeking to achieve. It's this variability that gives us the opportunity to learn and develop more effective choices of behaviour for the future and the opportunity to change unproductive behaviour.

What will participants learn?

  • Discover how your own motivation and values influence your behaviour
  • Gain a better understanding of the motivation and behaviour of others
  • Identify your personal response to conflict and make more effective choices as a result.
  • Learn ways to anticipate, prevent and manage conflict situations in your life
  • Capture relationship-building techniques that you will be able to apply immediately.

Benefits of the SDI

  • Easy to remember. Creates common language and short-hand communication.
  • Enhances ability to communicate more effectively in a depersonalized and empathetic manner.
  • Enhances ability to handle conflict more productively.
  • Improves all types of relationships (home, work, school, social, or otherwise).
  • Easy to integrate into training applications where productive relationships are important.
  • Over 35 years of applied use.

Understand your Conflict Sequence

Conflict Sequence is a three-stage set of motivational changes that influence the behavioural choices each person makes when relationships are not going well.

Many experts believe that unresolved conflict represents the largest reducible cost for business.

In most workplaces, it continues to be addressed in ad hoc, random and ineffective ways.

SDI makes it easier to prevent and resolve conflict before it becomes overwhelming or causes irretrievable and costly damage to personal or organisational relationships.

SDI reveals:

  • What triggers conflict
  • How people change their priorities during conflict
  • What people focus on during conflict
  • Why people misread the behaviours of others causing more conflict.

Timeframes

  • The SDI course normally goes for 1 day (7 hours).
  • To cover all the material thoroughly the course can also be conducted over 2 days.
  • It is possible to reduce the time to a half or three-quarters of a day, however the sacrifice is discussion times and application.

Turbo Charge Your Team

We created the Turbocharge Your Team program to help you and your team be and stay at your best.  This program is an Online Self-Study Program.

It condenses knowledge and ideas others take years to figure out (if ever) into one dynamic, easy to access, jam-packed full of value program.

In the program is all the things I wished someone had shown me in one place about how to be a great team leader. If you are a new team leader or very experienced you will find information, exercises and activities which will accelerate your abilities to lead your team.

At the heart of our approach are nine core habits that Transformational Group has identified in working with many teams, across many industries and organisations. We know what stops a team in its tracks and what gives them an extra advantage. We've isolated the problems and patterns, and developed tried-and-true methods that help teams see, believe, think, and act more effectively.

Inspired by the methods and techniques we've used with leadership teams at multi-national companies, government and not-for-profit organisations we are now making available to new and existing teams our insights and research to help you lead with excellence.

Unlike conventional team-building approaches, which often focus on a narrow slice of team dynamics, Turbocharge your team takes a systemic approach helping your team work better together and do better work.

The program has 4 components:

1. FUNDAMENTALS: You the Leader and team dynamics

2. PLANS: Creating strategic clarity and alignment

3. PEOPLE: Building emotional intelligence and dealing with people

4. PRACTICES: Developing robust performance, communication, accountability and development practices in the team.

Unique to this program you'll discover:

1. Step by Step activity guides that will accelerate your team's development

2. Insights into why individuals and the team are acting like they are

3. Concrete development ideas for you and your team.

Team Development & Facilitation

Sometimes the team needs some external support or help.

It might be an entrenched issue.

Maybe you are too close to the issue and you need outside perspective.

Maybe you want someone to walk you through the content and help you apply it even faster (you know you need some accountability).

Maybe you need to be a participant for the planning day and not run it.

Transform Leader is available to conduct team development days, facilitate planning days, provide a team/leadership coach or conduct a consultancy.

Each of these objectives were met or surpassed in a supportive and constructive environment.

    STEWART NOEL

    MANAGING DIRECTOR, TURBOMECA AUSTRALASIA

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the success achieved by the Turbomeca Australasia senior management team as a result of the training provided. The key objectives of the training were to:

    1. Build our team cohesion and unity.

    2. Develop our leadership knowledge and skills.

    3. Facilitate our clarity about our vision for the next phase of TAA.

Each of these objectives were met or surpassed in a supportive and constructive environment. In fact, the training brought our team to a depth of relationship that has transpired into a deeper trust of each member and an increased ease and openness that is evident on a daily basis.

In terms of developing individual leadership capability, each team member has personally experienced growth as they transition from good managers to great leaders. I am convinced that without this training, TAA would not have been able to achieve these results.

Finally, the clarity of our vision was reinforced and strengthened as each member contributed to consolidate the loose collection of values and transform them into a clear and distinct vision for the business moving forward.

We look forward to working with you again, in the not too distant future, and are excited to demonstrate to you how much we have grown as a leadership team.

THREE PATTERNS TO LOOK FOR WHEN A TEAM ISN'T WORKING:

    THE WAR ZONE

This team environment is characterised by watching one's back, the formation of factions, and manoeuvring behind closed doors. Members are primarily competitive with one another. Personality conflicts rule the way work is done or not done.

    THE LOVE FEST

These teams can become insular; separated from the overall organization. They assume that all the important perspectives are already in the room. They can be inclined to avoid the tough issues in the interest of maintaining good feelings. Conflict is avoided and seen as an enemy.

    THE UNTEAM

People function separately, and their main connection is to their leader. Meetings are used for status updates and top-down communication. They build little to no shared perspective on the broader organization or industry, and their meetings are seen as a waste of time.
